This is the first step to widening 20th Avenue to a five-lane road with left-turning bays and lights at the intersection of 8th Street and 20th Avenue.
Robert Porter, the Public Works director for Safford, said Safford and the town of Thatcher will construct the bridge, which is expected to be completed by Feb. 1, 2005.
Emergency services, including police and fire departments, ambulance and the Mt. Graham Medical Regional Center, have been made aware that traffic will be rerouted through 14th Avenue in Safford, which is a school zone.
Drivers are asked to remain cautious when taking the 14th Avenue route, especially during school hours after the Christmas holiday.
Message and detour signs will be erected to direct traffic, Porter said.
The 8th Street intersection will be open during bridge construction, and people can access the Whistle Stop and the Barnet Dulaney Eye Center. Twentieth Avenue will also be open to traffic north of Relation Street to Bulldog Boulevard.
Phase I of the 20th Avenue project will officially begin in May and includes the intersection work.
"This will necessitate another two-week closure of the road," Porter said. This phase is funded by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).
When Phase II is completed, the 20th-Avenue roadway north of the railroad will have five lanes.
This phase must be completed by Nov. 1, according to the city's agreement with Wal-Mart, which is building a Super Center north of 8th Street and east of 20th Avenue.
Phase III will complete roadwork south of the Union Canal, and Phase IV will be the construction of a path south of the canal to 8th Avenue.

In literature there are many scientific indications that the preparation of the sacred liquid (Haoma),could not contain a Hallucinogen-Entheogen drug (cf publications of Harry Falk, Jan Houben, Frits Staal and the late Mary Boyce).
As a plant-physiologist and toxicologian, I did some study about the preparation of Parahom (as described in Avesta). From the scientic point of view it is impossible that the sacred drink is hallucinogen.
I do not understand the arguments of the Pima's Church of Cognizance.
It is as stupid as the assert: Jesus used Marihuana. "
