Reader disturbed by Spanish advertisement

Editor:

I am an average middle- class, middle-age American citizen living in the United States.

I went to my mailbox the other day to get my mail, and I fould a store flyer from Wal-Mart in my box. As a consumer, I look forward to store fliers, but as I started to read it because of the bold, large-size text, I was not able to read it or understand it because it was written in Spanish!

When I sat down to put on my reading glasses and look at it again, I noticed under the big, bold Spanish words and pictures were English words of small text size, which I was unable to see without my reading glasses.

This really upset and disturbed me because I live in the United States, and I felt as though I was (being treated as) a second-class citizen.

Don't get me wrong - I have many Mexican friends who are bilingual, and I think it's great for anyone to be bilingual.

I just felt that this flyer was made for the non-American citizens living in the United States.

If Wal-Mart wants the average American citizen living in the United States to feel like a second-class citizen by mailing these types of fliers, then I will make every effort not to shop at Wal-Mart.

I also received an interesting e-mail the other night. It displayed an American flag that asked "Why should I have to 'press 1' for English?"

I believe people from other countries should be able to immigrate to the United States legally, but the illegals should go back and get in line behind those who are trying to come here legally.
