Graham/Greenlee drought impact group part of state initiative

A group tasked with assessing drought impacts to Graham and Greenlee counties will make recommendations for mitigation to city and county officials.

"This group has no regulatory power at all. Its job is to recommend," said Kim McReynolds, a University of Arizona extension agent and facilitator of the group.

The Graham/Greenlee Local Area Impact Assessment Group, or LAIAG, held its first meeting on Feb. 22. Agencies sending representatives included the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the federal Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, Farm Bureau and the Arizona Cattle Growers.

The LAIAG is one of several county groups established to coordinate public awareness of the drought, to provide impact information to city and county officials and to develop and implement local mitigation and response options, according to the Arizona Department of Water Resources.

"One of the pushes is to get better information," McReynolds said. This information will include the amount of rainfall in several areas of Graham and Greenlee counties and the impacts of the drought on the two counties.

McReynolds said the group chose an interim committee tasked with organizing the group and identifying people to invite to join the group. The interim committee will meet at 10 a.m. March 12 in the Graham County Services Building, 921 Thatcher Blvd.

According to the ADWR Web site, each county group will be coordinated by a county extension agent and the county emergency manager. McReynolds said she is the extension agent for Graham and Greenlee counties.

According to the ADWR, the Governor's Drought Task Force was established in 2003. This group developed the state's Drought Preparedness Plan. County LAIAGs are a result of this plan.

" I went to this camp in the summer of 05 when they were located in concho. I highly doubt that vallentine is telling the truth because when i went they was plenty of food. I remeber that they made us but on spf 50 sunscreen by the gallons. They provided us with gallons of water a day. I think that denton should have stayed in concho because it was a lot better. Big deal the recruits have no ac or water. what to expect bootcamp to be a vaction? And by the way the dirt isnt going to kill you "
