Jesse Nevin, a local artist and sculptor, will discuss sculpting and bronze-casting at a meeting sponsored by the Art Guild of Eastern Arizona.
The meeting is free and will be Tuesday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m. at The Little Art Gallery, 832 N. Stadium Ave. in Thatcher.
“That whetted my appetite,” Nevin said.
A few years later, a friend and drawing teacher at Dobson High School in Mesa mentioned he would be retiring soon. Nevin took the opportunity to go back and minor in art. “I had my minor completed when he retired, and I took over his job as drawing teacher at Dobson and later became the department chair,” Nevin said. “I taught drawing, painting and photography for nine years.”
Nevin moved to the Gila Valley after he retired several years ago, but he has agreed to teach drawing and oil painting for the fall semester at EAC. “I really love teaching drawing, and I miss it,” Nevin said.
For his own art Nevin likes the 3-D nature of sculpture. He enjoys both clay sculpture and bronze-casting for their different qualities. “I love the immediacy of ceramics and clay sculpture,” Nevin said, “Yet bronze-casting is definitely a more lasting medium. There are bronzes that are 2,000 to 3,000 years old that still look as good as when they were made.”
