Thatcher resident Jake Ray Johns, 18, succumbed to injuries he sustained in a single-vehicle accident that occurred approximately 30 miles east of Safford at around 6 p.m. on Monday.

Department of Public Safety Sgt. Dan Long said Johns was traveling eastbound on Highway 70 when he slid off the road to the right. Johns overcorrected the green 1998 Mazda pick-up he was driving and caused the vehicle to cross both lanes of the highway before rolling off a ledge. The truck fell approximately 40 to 45 feet before coming to a rest upright.

Johns, who was ejected from the vehicle, was flown to University Medical Center in Tucson. He passed away at the hospital at 3:45 Tuesday morning.
