Storyteller entertains with imagination and flare

Glenda Bonin proves in her profession that imagination and storytelling are essential keys in the book of life.

Bonin, a storyteller, story teacher, performer and workshop presenter for more than 25 years, loves what she does.

Bonin visited a public speaking class at Eastern Arizona College this month and presented not only stories but suggestions for students. After visiting EAC, she went to surrounding schools. Later that night, she did a free reading at Discovery Park Campus’ Circle D Ranch that was suitable for all ages.

EAC speech communications instructor Lee Russell introduced Bonin as “one of the best (storytellers) we have in the state of Arizona.” He said, “Stories are not just a way for us to be entertained, although they truly are that — but they are made for us to grow and improve in strength as individuals.”

When Bonin took the stage, she started by explaining the tradition of storytelling. She said it is a way to communicate and share humanities and cultures with others.

Bonin went on to tell students at EAC how storytelling can be used in any field of profession. During her presentation, she would slide in unexpected stories, and she fed off the reaction the audience gave her.

Bonin first began storytelling years ago at a small library in New Jersey. When she was a young mother, she took her kids to the library for story time only to find there wasn’t one. The librarian was looking for a volunteer, and Bonin accepted. From there she got involved with clowning, magic and puppetry.

Her kids grew up and she moved on to other things, then 12 years ago lost her job and turned her love of storytelling into a full-time profession. She said, “Follow your dream, even if it is not practical.”

Bonin lives in Tucson and travels in her RV around the United States. She has been as far as Pennsylvania and Alaska. She uses magic, puppetry, theatre arts and creative writing activities. According to her Web site, all of her programs are tailored to meet the needs and interests of each group.
