This $520,000 grant is for the development and facilitation of classes and curriculum geared toward enhancing science content and teaching methods of elementary and junior high instructors from southeastern Arizona. The 19-month grant will allow 60 instructors to register and attend EAC for two weeklong summer institutes, four two-day follow-up sessions and monthly online interventions and site visits.
EAC biology instructors David Henson, Mike McCarthy and Tammy Gillespie will design the curriculum and course work, instruct the institutes and workshops, and coordinate the dialogue throughout the grant cycle. EAC Dean of Instruction Phil McBride will act as liaison between the college and Gila ESA.
“The goal is to empower our local instructors with standards-based content comprehension at a deeper level of understanding than they received during their educational preparation coursework,” Henson said.
The target group will be fifth- to eighth-grade science teachers from Gila, Graham and Greenlee counties.
