Mitt Romney dominated the Republican presidential preference election in Graham County on Tuesday, beating Arizona Senator John McCain, while New York Senator Hillary Clinton prevailed over Illinois Senator Barack Obama in the Democratic election.

According to unofficial totals from the Graham County Elections Department, Romney garnered 1,707 votes — 65.88 percent of the Republican votes cast — compared to 638 for McCain.

Clinton received 959 votes — 45.97 percent of the Democratic votes — while Obama got 834 votes — 39.98 percent.

In the Republican race, Mike Huckabee receive 5.98 percent of the vote and Ron Paul got 2.16 percent.

The Democratic election saw John Edwards garnering 8.44 percent of the vote and Bill Richardson receiving 2.25 percent.

Edwards dropped out of the presidential campaign last week and Richardson dropped out in early January.

Judy Dickerson, elections director, said the vote totals do not include the provisional ballots cast on election day. Provisional ballots are those used by voters whose registration was questioned at the polls. Their votes will count if county election officials can verify they are registered voters.

" Whoa! The bigots posting here are large in number!

Chief Justice, Oops, and Hillbilly...did you learn your bigotry from the Baptist preacher man Huckabee, or does it just come naturally?

I'm sure you'll be happy when your man crush McCain gets the nod for the GOP and then gets pulverized by the Demoncrats.

We can all thank bigots like you for the outcome of the November election.

Oh no! We don't want the most qualified man to run for president...'cause he's a Mormon!! Heaven forbid!!! "

" Why aren't Greenlee County residents given the election news as are the residents of Graham County. Come on Walter, give us the news we are entitled to or turn the job over to someone who will. I wouldn't object to paying the same amount as the Courier costs if we received the same level of news. "

" True American, if you will check out Snopes.com you will find out that the story about Obama not pledging the flag is not true. Someone started that on the internet and it went like wildfire. Just like some of the statements made in this forum about Safford City Council. "

" Romney won in a few Mormon dominated areas because people voted for their religion instead of voting for the best person for the job. Thank goodness that wasn't the case in the majority of this great nation. McCain & Huckabee are far better choices. Lets hope we see a McCain/Huckabee ticket for our party. "

" Is it really a suprise that Romney won in the Valley? Not to me it isn't. So he took our little town, McCain took the whole state. I'm so glad that McCain is going to take the Repulican nomination. Celebrate for the little victory, but don't get too happy, he'll be dropping out soon! "

" In Navajo, Apache as well as in Graham County Mitt Romney won by upwards of 60% of the Republican vote. In Utah he received 90% of the party vote.

The question now is can Obama close the slim 70 delegate lead of Hillary to win the Democratic nomination?
