Marcos Zaragosa enjoys speed. That’s why the 14-year-old from Safford competes in the Gila Monster Go-Kart Association.

The races take place in Globe at the Gila Valley Fairgrounds. Zaragoza is in his fourth year of competing in the Gila Monster Go-Kart Association, and he has already enjoyed great success.

Zaragoza won the points championship in 2005 and ‘06, and he is in first place this season with five races left. He finished fourth in points in 2007.

The season begins in April and finishes in September, and races are held every two weeks. Zaragoza has raced seven times this year and won three times. He also has one second-place finish and three fourth-place finishes. Zaragoza started racing at the age of 10, and he won his first championship at age 11.

Last season, Zaragoza wrecked his go-kart doing a 360 in mid-air. His father, Herman, built the go-kart he’s using this season in two-and-a-half months. Herman and Pima resident Steve Martinez sponsor the go-kart.

“He’s having a little bit more fun this year,” Herman said of his son. Zaragoza races in the Senior Class, which includes riders ages 12-18.

Zaragoza, who lives in Miami and will be a freshman at Miami High School in the fall, has a 30-point lead in the standings with five races remaining. Zaragoza’s mother is Berna Zaragoza, from Safford, and he is the grandson of Frank and Rose Abril of Safford. Herman lives in Miami.

Martinez recently opened Martinez Repair Shop in Pima, which specializes in quads. It is located at 155 W. Center Street.

" His mom lives in Safford, but he and his dad live in Miami and he will attend Miami High School. Sounds like he is from Miami with a mother living in Safford. Shucks, even the race is in Miami. How about letting the Miami newspaper handle their local stuff and we get our local stuff in. I haven't seen anything about little league. Actually, I haven't seen anything about any sports and school starts in less than two weeks! Has the sports guy been vacation for a month or what? "
