Dear Editor:

We, the Fourth of July In-dependence Day Celebra-tion Committee, would like to thank our Grand Marshal Captain Weldon Green, veteran of the U.S. Army, for serving as our parade grand marshal. Mr. Green is a veteran of WWII and a true patriot.

Green is a native of the Gila Valley, being born in Safford and living in the area his whole life. He went to war in the 1940s and served for four years in the Army. While in the Army, he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.

Following his return home after serving his country, he was active in the local National Guard for nine years. It was while he was in the National Guard that he received the rank of captain.

He became a businessman, owning a grocery store and the Western Auto store. He served on the Safford Planning and Zoning Committee for 15 years. He is still active in his church, having served in many jobs throughout the years as he and his wife raised their family. Most of his children are business leaders in Safford.

Thanks to Captain Weldon Green for being a great patriot, businessman, family man, and church and community leader, and especially for being our grand marshal in the Fourth of July parade.

Dick Bingham,

chairman

Let Freedom Ring

Fourth of July Celebration Committee
