Fire destroys home south of Safford

A fire erupted early Friday morning and completely destroyed a house south of Safford.

Firefighters and police were dispatched to the fire at 8746 South Cheyenne Drive at around 6:23 a.m.

According to Safford Assistant Fire Chief Tony Goodman, the residence was fully engulfed upon arrival, and the best they could do was to contain the blaze to the single structure. The residence is located just east of the Federal Correction Institution at Safford.

Initially, rescuers were told of a possible victim who might still be inside the structure, but that report turned out to be false.

Goodman said he was relieved the report of the victim was false because "there was no going in when we arrived on scene."

According to a Graham County Sheriff's report, a resident of the home, Timothy Daniels Jr., awoke when the fan in his room stopped. He then smelled smoke and found that a hole in the wall behind a couch was on fire. The report states Daniels Jr. attempted to put out the fire and locate his father, who owns the home. When he could do neither, he escaped from the fire.

A neighbor, Michael Clampitt, told police he wet a blanket and used it for protection when he, too, entered the fiery structure in an attempt to locate Timothy Daniels Sr.

Daniels Jr. and Clampitt suffered minor burns and were treated on scene by paramedics from Southwest Ambulance. Daniels Sr. had apparently left the residence before the fire started and was located a short while later.

Goodman said despite a thorough examination by the fire department, the cause of the fire has not been determined.

" We would all save a bunch of money if we each chip in to have Chuck Norris come and roundhouse kick all the fires out. Come to think of it...He could replace half the police force and at the same time give the hospital some more business. "

" You ask for fire hydrants, you are probably in supervisor district 3 why don't you talk to Max Hinton that is one of his objectives if elected to the Board of Supervisors. You have a choice not take the off fall of Safford. Yes, the volunteer fire department of Safford has served the valley well but Safford and Graham County is expanding and needs more. "

It did NOT take the Fire dept. forever to get out there. There are many who would like to be volunteer firefighters. A few are chosen. Give them the credit they deserve.
Also, why don't you ask your county supervisor to get you some hydrants out there. "

" After being alerted by two sheriff deputies of this house fire next door I got on the roof of my place to water down our structure from where I could see much of the effort that the Safford Fire Department expended on this fire. The lack of hydrants out here was a real problem for fighting this blaze and 4 truckloads of water were needed to extinguish it. My thanks to the Sheriff Dept and to the Safford Fire Dept for their efforts to contain this blaze and alerting us to the danger. "

We are growing out here and we need more than just"(thank god nobody was in the building when the fire started)"the volenter fire department. By the time the fire department does get out here all we will have is either a slab(for the new houses)or just the brick walls that supported the roof. As I have stated it was my choice to move out here but not my choice for growth. "

I appauld the volenter response but that's fine and dandy for the people that live in town. How about the folks that live in places such as south of town.I know I chose to move out here knowing what I was having to deal with. What I did not bargin for was HIGHER Ins. rates due to the fact we do not have any fire hydrants here.It takes the fire department(by the time they "

" Yes, it will cost more than a volunteer FD, but face it, this town is actually growing and spreading out, placing more demand on the current dept. MY insurance is a bit high because the nearest station is 7 mi away and there are no hydrants. It took forever for the FD to get out here. Heaven forbid if we have a medical emergency! The idea is that more people bring more money to use on such projects to match new demand, not placing more demand on individuals. Besides, how many people are willing/able to volunteer? "

" Safford has had a volunteer fire department of about a 100 years, because of them our fire insurance rates are low. These men used to be called out maybe once a week to fires, now it is getting to the point it is 2,3,or 4 a day. Not many bosses can afford to let their employee off work that much of the time. In the near future we are going to have to have a paid fired department and then it is going to cost you and me bunches of money.Only firemen run into a burningbuilding. "

" It is sort of like this. Why would you want to fix something that is not broken and works very well and why would you want to pay much, much more for fire Protection just to have a paid department? And who would be paying you? The citizens of the City of Safford and me. No, thank you. "

" I watched the fire and was so very thankful there were firefighters there. That being said, I'm surprised that some folks here seem opposed to a new fire station and paid fighters. Even though you may not like the sight of people like me here, the fact is we bring new revenue just by being here. We pay income tax, property tax, and sales tax just like you. This equals more money in the hands of the local government at no charge to you. What would you have done with the money if not spent on infastructure? "

" Are you really so upset that the Assistant Chief was not prepared at deadline of this report to say without a doubt the exact cause of the fire? Is that it? Or are you perhaps grasping at straws out of jealousy or personal issues with individuals? Surely an intelligent person such as you would have a more articulate, fact-based argument if the city of Safford was really desperately in need of a full-time paid fire department and a new chief. "

Whale educated wrote on Aug 7, 2008 10:46 AM:

" A move to a paid department would require incorporation of medical services to give the paid department something to do as well as try to bring in some sort of cash flow. Note that this would require a new fire station, purchase of ambulances, equipment and restructuring. In the future, you should try not to be so cavalier with you remarks towards men who do their very best while DONATING their time and RISKING their health to provide a service to your community. "

" Dear Ed, Let me contribute a little to your education. I actually work in emergency services in a city with a paid department. Fire fighters in paid departments actually do very little fire fighting. In fact about 85% of calls are medical. Fire calls are not only less common due to modern technology such as sprinkler systems and building codes, they are also a huge financial drain. How would a "well educated" man like yourself propose paying for adequate numbers of firefighters to be on call 24-7 for an event that might happen once every 1-2 weeks? "

The current fire department is awesome at what they do. They keep everyone's insurance down and are inexpensive to tax payers because they are volunteer. These are facts. "
