Free meals are not free; taxpayer bears burden of service

Editor:

Every year I read the announcement in the paper: “Free meals available to area children,” and I cringe. Last year it even finally came to Greenlee County, and I cringed some more.

Why in the world would free breakfasts and lunches be a bad thing? I mean the price of gas and food is up. Why not take advantage of a “free” program? Hey, just send the kiddies down at breakfast and lunch and get them out of your hair for a few hours, sleep in, don’t worry about fixing meals. It’s free.

I’ve got news for you. It’s not free. And it’s a bad idea. It’s not only a bad idea. It’s an idea that would make the Founding Fathers roll over in their graves. Jefferson, Madison and others have already told us why.

Consider:

“The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”

- Thomas Jefferson

“I place economy among the first and most important virtues, and public debt as the greatest of dangers to be feared. To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. If we run into such debts, we must be taxed in our meat and drink, in our necessities and in our comforts, in our labor and in our amusements. If we can prevent the government from wasting the labor of the people, under the pretense of caring for them, they will be happy.”

- Thomas Jefferson

“I think we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious.”

-Thomas Jefferson

“With respect to the words general welfare, I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators.”

- James Madison

Why should I give the care and feeding of my children over to the government? I believe my husband and I are responsible to feed, clothe and shelter them. I am not speaking to those who fall on hard times.

I can justify programs for people who have hardship through no fault of their own. But it is wrong for the general public to take advantage of this kind of program. And it is equally wrong for the powers that be to provide a program for the general public.

My guess is that these programs are funded from tax dollars from Washington or the state. And all dollars from those places come from “we the people.” Through all generations since our founding, Americans have been proud to pull themselves up by the bootstraps and take care of themselves. Now, we as a nation are happy to accept any handout or “free” thing the government offers.

What if, instead of letting Washington or the state be the middleman, we all went in search of our freebies ourselves? Can you imagine sending your children out your door each morning and letting them knock on a different door every day, and asking that the neighbors feed them breakfast and lunch?

Most of your neighbors might indulge them a time or two, but after several days in a row, they would send the little darlings packing and tell them to have mom and dad put the food in their mouths. And yet we have no qualms sending them down to the middle school or the pool or the local park to do what we are not willing to do ourselves.

There was a time when the only reason you were standing in a soup line was because you had no food or money. Now, it seems the food line is the norm of the day. The inflation that we see today in gas and food is our own fault and the fault of our irresponsible elected officials.

If you are not willing to do your part, then you are to blame. Every dollar we vote to come into our own pocket robs us of our freedom. Well, when we have no freedoms left, ask yourself: What did I do to contribute to it?

" FYI! I do know how to spell without spell check! When there are long comments this program does it's own formatting. This is beside the point~ "

" Teachers kids seen making use of this program. Whats os I would like to say that teachers are some of the least paid public servants in the country. Dawn Norton kept quoting T Jefferson, James Madison, whom had not children and changed his tune by the end of his life. If things in this world were like they were in the days of these men, things would be in much better shape econmically! I am saddened by such judmentalism and selfishness! The food goes to children in our community! The government spends billions of dollars onunnecessarythings! "

" I saw this program in action at the Safford Pool. The food was dropped off 2 times a day. Life guards were instructed to throw away or take home extra food, so that it met its quotas. The program is GREAT if it goes to the people who really need it. But it has become a service to baby sitting parents as a free meal. Great idea, but horrible plan of attach. Regroup, and come up with a program that gives to those who need it, not those who find it convenient. "

" Let's take care of our elderly in Graham County. There are so many elderly people living in our smaller towns surrounding Safford that suffer greatly. What about a program for these people? Let's feed them and take care of them. "

" This is a good program if it goes to the NEEDY. I happened to stop in one day and saw numerous children whom I know are not needy. Some belonged to teachers, City officials and so on. They should have to qualify to be able to benefit from this. NEEDY YES, LAZY PARENTING NO!!!! "

" I agree that the elderly in the valley could use what is thrown away. If the food has not expired, they could certainly benefit. We have elderly all over Graham County that would love to have a fresh glass of orange juice or a cold glass of milk, but since their Social Security checks only allow them minimal items, they suffer. They are the ones that deserve the free food. All citizens over 70 should be included. "

" I agree with most of this letter, however I endorse this program. This program is only free for children. I support programs that promote the well being and rights of children. Children do not get to choose the circumstances they are born in. The poverty rate in Arizona is higher than the National rate. Some of the basic human needs are things such as food and water. Good nutrition is an essential part of healthy child development. This program is investing in the health of our children and produces enormous benefits to children "

" First let me start by saying I agree with some of this letter, but not all people take advantage of this program. I have worked everyday for the last 13 years, i am a single mom by choice, id rather raise my children alone than with a father who uses drugs. even though i work full time, take any overtime i can get i still depend on this program, i feed my children breakfast if they want to, because i to am a taxpayer!!! " I think that these young woman that having all these children should be required to have some kind of birth control, and urine test before they are entitled to food stamps, welfare and all the other freebies they get like health care. If you can't afford them don't have them. I for one am tired of paying for your ever growing families. Your kids have better clothes than mine but I pay my way and the welfare mothers and dead beat fathers don't pay a dime. "

    " Bravo Ms. Norton!

That is the best letter to the editor I've read in quite some time. That's not an easy feat because I often applaud F. Brent Moody's letters as well.

I've always been told by my dad that someone always pays the bill. It's simple but absolutely true. It's sad the direction that our society is going.

I better get back to work so I can feed my own child as well as for all those "free" breakfasts and lunches. "

" And in addition to this, (I witnessed this) the food that was left-over, including un-opened, unexpired cartons of milk and orange juice, were thrown in the trash! When we asked one of the employees about this, they said they were not allowed to give the food away.
It's too bad that at least the milk / juice couldn't have been given to the elderly citizens here in the valley!!! "
