Horse owner calls it Graham County Unfairgrounds

Editor:

Along with several other racehorse owners and trainers, I was recently forced to vacate the horse facility at the Graham County Fairgrounds. I feel that the Board of Supervisors, county manager and director of the County Fair and Racing Association acted unjustly and rudely in forcing us to leave our training facility.

I was denied a spot on the agenda for the Aug. 18 Board of Supervisors meeting, where I was hoping to get answers to these and other questions:

1. Why does the director have the right to move his relative’s horses to the pastures on the grounds after he evicted us? “All horses. . . must be removed” was on the notice given to us.

2. Why does he continue to waste the city’s potable water on these pastures, even overwatering them to the point of flooding the barn area? Again, all horses must be removed.

3. Why did the director neglect the basic maintenance (mowing, weeding, garbage collection) in the barn area? Yet he made a point to say how bad the barn area looked.

4. What improvements, if any, is the county considering for the barn area? We, the horsemen, should have input.

5. Where is the money coming from for any repairs and improvements? County employees didn’t get their pay raises, and the director gave the county’s betterment money to Cochise County.

6. Why did the director give Graham County betterment money to Cochise County? Past distributions of Arizona County Fair’s betterment money helped build the fairgrounds.

7. Why do people who live in the fairgrounds’ county-owned house have the right to ride unlicensed motorized vehicles around the fairgrounds? It is plainly posted “No unlicensed motorized vehicles.”

The Board of Supervisors, manager and director have shown nothing but arrogance toward me and the other horsemen with regard to this matter. I read Walter Mares’ viewpoint in the Aug. 13 Courier: “Taxpayers should expect answers, not arrogance.” It makes you wonder. It’s not democracy.

" You had your answer to Democracy in the last election-and your answer crybaby-so stay in Tucson where you belong.

PS-the question really is why did you neglect to weed, mow and especially clean up your own garbage if you were renting the facility-have you ever had a real job? "

" What is $80,000.00 in 21 months? Have you seen that RV spaces rent for at least $250.00 per month - how much were you paying - $40.00? And how about boarding a horse some place - $200.00 per month - and what were you paying - $1.50 per day? Can you say "ripping off the taxpayers"? What does Graham County owe the people at the racetrack? Nothing! Can you live at Pima County Fairgrounds? Maybe you should check in to that! "

" Once you say you were given 20 days-then you say you were given 30 days-the contract that you signed said you would have to vacate in 3 days if asked to do so. Seems like they had mercy with you-freeloader! Also you say it was your betterment money, so now you have title to money that belongs to the citizens of Graham County. Please furnish the paper with your copy of a deed to the park so you can set the public straight. Seems like nothing but the truth comes forth from you. LOL "

" I was at the park office and asked about the horse articles in the courier. Mr. Faunce showed me pictures of why they closed the barns. The public should go see these for yourself, these people were abusing our facilities and tax dollars. After you look at the pictures your only thought will be that these people give white trash a bad name. God bless Mr. Faunce and the Board for taking care of this area of our beautiful facilities. I for one love the park and all its surroundings, especially now. "

" It is really a shame that all of you horse people have lost your right to make money off of the taxpayers of Graham County. After all we should support you with everything we have because you are such a viable part of our economy. NOT!!!! Everytime my family drove by the facilities you lived and operated your businesses from it was an utter pig pen! If you had eyes you could see the improvements that have been made since the Manager has been there. You people are blind, except to your own needs. "

" The horseman paid almost $80,000 in RV and barn rent over the last 21 months.
Our betterment money also built the barns and put in the track, not to mention paying for the up keep on the facility.
I think this qualifies as paying our way.
This is not about maintenance needing to be done, it's about how Mr. Faunce handled the situation. I was given a 20 day notice to leave my home and give up my livelihood.
I think 'the truth' should do a little research before mouthing off. "

" it is hard to make money at an mx track, when you can not ever have access to it, due to horses. You race 2 weekends a year and have a huge facility, and have your own people complaining because they are asked to leave for a while while improvements are made. What does horse racing do for the families in the gila valley? Not much. I know of at least 100 kids plus there families that came faithfully to every mx practice and race. Add the money up over a year and it would compare with full access "

" 'Graham county tax payer' and 'the truth' should get their story straight about where we horseman come from before shooting off their mouths.
Many of us were born and raised right here in Graham or Greenlee County.
The fairgrounds has been my home for over 10 years and my horses have been boarded there for over 20. I think that makes me a tax payer too.
Oh,and incidentally, it also makes me a voter. "

" To all thè people on here who think that the horse racing and the horseman are a waste of time, your just a bunch of ignorant mormans that are all looking out for the money that they think the mx track has potential to pull in. Well whoever wrote that the horse racing circut doesn't make as much money as the mx track could is wrong! Those horseman have been there for years and haven't hurt any one, you people just want something to complain about and those that get a little power tend to abuse it!! "

Don't get me wrong Safford is a nice place if you are part of the "brothers" its not "what you know, its who you know". When people see it advertised as a great place to live they should also disclose that you have to be part of the

The director at the fairgrounds is the best thing that happened to the fairgrounds, there have been multiple impreovements, and many more are planned. I think your stables should be left to rot since you are not for improvement. you sould stay in tucson along with all your friends that feel the same as you. the only good "horse people" i have met is the ones who are ranchers. An MX track could bring in 10 times the revenue you do. "

" Jon, Whatever gave you the idea that Graham County was "democratic"? It's not a democracy, it's a theocracy. If you expect to get positive responses from it's government, you had better begin paying more tithing, (oops, I meant more taxes) in the county. And by the way, don't be upset, it's been that way for 150 years. Either get used to it, or move in and vote them out. Of course you'll need a whole "block" of friends to vote for you. That's the way it's done in Graham County. Yeah, "block voting", that will work. "
