A surprisingly good performance from Veritas combined with a poor effort from the Apaches led to a closer game than expected. Fort Thomas held on to win 36-26 at home.
“Veritas played a lot better than against Pima,” Hinton said. “We looked bad. We dodged a bullet tonight. We just didn’t play well at all.”
The Falcons led 6-0 after one quarter before Fort Thomas (3-0) broke out with a 28-point second quarter. The Apaches led 28-20 at the half.
Fort Thomas tailback Estevan Mesa was a multi-faceted threat, as he accounted for 200 of the Apaches’ 273 total yards of offense.
Mesa rushed for 128 yards and a score and also hauled in two passes for 72 yards.
His productivity on special teams was just as important. Mesa had 130 kickoff return yards and a touchdown and returned four punts for 67 yards. He even had a second kickoff return score called back because of a penalty.
Hinton wasn’t happy with how his team played, but he said the Apaches made plays when they needed to and played just well enough to win. He said his players have to be a lot better next week if they expect to beat Pima.
Daniel Boni rushed for 57 yards on nine carries and scored twice. Quarterback Jace Wilson completed 6-13 throws for 94 yards and a touchdown but was picked off three times. The Apaches also had five fumbles (two lost) for a total of five turnovers.
