SalsaFest 2008 is Sept. 26 and 27
The community is invited to join in the fun on the Safford Town Square as the second annual SalsaFest gets under way Friday, Sept. 26, 5 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 27, 9 a.m. This year's festivities include a salsa-making competition, hot air balloons, a marketplace, SalsaWalk for Kids, salsa music, dance performances, food demonstrations, chile roasting, a kids corner with a piñata bust, and jalapeño and salsa-eating contests.

Solomon to hold preschool screening
Solomon Elementary School will hold an educational screening for preschool children Aug. 26, starting at 8 a.m. The screening will be held at the school for all children who will be 3, 4 and 5 years old before Sept. 1, 2008, who have not yet attended public school. If they have already been tested but have not attended school, they will need to be retested. Parents who have children ages birth to 3 about whom they have concerns should inform the school so that it may direct them to the appropriate agency.

Jennifer Ratliff, a 2008 graduate of Red Mountain High School in Mesa, was awarded the $30,000 ASU Milton D. Glick Provost Scholarship in recognition of her outstanding academic achievement. She will pursue an education in the medical field.

Marine recruit surprises family and friends with news
Felicity McGraw, a 2008 graduate of Thatcher High School and the daughter of John and Jenny Howard, enlisted in the Marine Corps on the Delayed Entry Program in the spring of 2008. Her scheduled date to ship to Parris Island, S.C., for basic training was Nov. 24.

Sobriety checkpoints in force over Labor Day Weekend
The Eastern Arizona DUI Task Force will be deployed in Graham and Greenlee counties over Labor Day Weekend, Aug. 29-Sept. 1. The task force will use saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints to remove or deter impaired drivers from streets and highways. The task force is funded by the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
