Candidate is putting out misleading advertising

Dear Editor:

While I was in Safford this last weekend for the Safford High School reunion, I saw the ads for Darlene Alder, the candidate running against Graham County Assessor Jacque Attaway, in which Ms. Alder promises to lower everyone’s taxes if she is elected.

If there’s anything I dislike more than negative political ads, it is misleading and false political advertising. Ms. Alder knows or should know that there is virtually nothing she could do as county assessor to keep this promise. The job of the county assessor is to do just what the title of the office proclaims: assess property for the taxes that are established by other governmental bodies, over which the county assessor has absolutely no control.

Jacque Attaway is an experienced Graham County official whose competence is respected statewide. In these troubled times, the implementation of taxing decisions requires that an experienced and competent person occupy the position of county assessor. That person for Graham County is Jacque Attaway.

Sincerely,

Brent Moody

" Could it be that Alder really doesn't know what she has got herself into? The old saying "some of the time you ask for something and then you wished you didn't have it". This is gonna be comical - I'm already laughing. HA HA HA HA "

" Its not misleading, she simply is clueless about the job. Do we really want to elect a nice clueless person to handle our property valuations??

Run! Screaming from that image!!! Lets keep what we know works - Jackie Attaway. "

" In answer to WOW, what I am is a person with over 40 years of experience in practicing real property law, knowledgeable about appraisal and assessment policies and procedures regarding levying real property taxes. Ms. Alder's husband alleges I am drinking some kind of kool-aid in supporting Jacque Attaway, which, of course is nonsense--unless the truth is kool aid. What I can't swallow is Ms. Alder's false promises. What the Alders need to do is familiarize themselves with the law concerning valuation of property for tax purposes. But, however she words it, she couldn't keep either promise. "

" You need to read the law. Every property owner in the state has the right to appeal their VALUES. These are subject to review of the market. I work in the Yuma County Assessors office and this is just plain ignorance of the law. You should hope that you aren't elected - I think you will be surprised of what you have promised and what you can't do. "

" Mrs Attaway only had banking experience when she started working in the Assessors Office and it took her SEVERAL years before she actualy finished the Basic App. schooling, so like any job once you are in there you learn the ropes, and you cant tell me that they cant lower taxes, what do you think appeal forms for to appeal your value and then they lower your property or should I say it also depends on who you are, but it can be done. "

" Assessed values are on a 2 year cycle. The peak was well over a year ago. The value will go down starting next year.
The BOS adjusted the actual tax rate to keep the tax paid the same and will just adjust it again next year to compensate when the valuations start to go down(and they will).
Mrs. Alder is right the values will go down but not because of anything the County Assesor does. It's a frivilous job controlled mostly by State Law. "

" Darlene Alder hasn't a clue about assessed values. Her husband is one of the most disliked business owners in the valley and has swindled many people over the years. Who really is running for assessor on the Republican ticket?Darlene Alder or Duane Rhodes ... "

" If the value goes down (which it probably can't) the schools and county would raise the tax rate because they have a budget that needs to be funded and your tax bill would still increase. Assessor has no control of the tax rate. Sorry. "

    " Actually:
Assessed Value X Tax Rate = TAX AMOUNT . So simple math shows if the assessed value goes down and the tax rate stays same, the tax amount is less. Maybe math is different in Phoenix. Also, I believe her ad said she would lower values. Just a thought. "

" Mr Moody claims to have been here for the Safford school reunion, that lasted until Sunday. He wrote this letter and it was published in the Wednesday paper. That is the most amazing time line I have ever seen with this paper! There are stories that are still waiting to make the paper. And the courier has to have everything in the week before printing because they have to send it out of town. Again, I say amazing. Or maybe this guy is full of it! Friend of Jacque Attaway? Went to school with her? "

Who knows wrote on Oct 22, 2008 7:49 PM:

" No one knows what Darlene Alder is capable of accomplishing. If she is elected, she will have to attend appraiser school among other trainings. She will be more qualified than Attaway, because she will have all the new ways of doing things. Attaway is old and she is just like the BOS, lazy and think that the job is owed to them because they have had it. We need change in this county in order for things to get better. People put away your petty ideas of people & vote for new & improved!!!! "
