Alder, a Republican, received 5,974 votes — 242 more than incumbent Attaway, who received 5,732. As of press time Friday, there were still 59 ballots to be verified by election officials. The number of unverified ballots was not enough to change the outcome of the election, Elections Director Judy Dickerson said.
The vote tallies for the election will become official after they are accepted by the Graham County Board of Supervisors on Nov. 13.
“I love this county and the people who live here,” she said.
She also talked about the new job she will assume Jan. 1.
“I feel it’s a great honor and a great responsibility to serve the people of Graham County,” Alder said.
During the campaign, Alder, a Gila Valley native, said she had extensive experience reviewing real estate appraisals and financial documentation for mortgage company loan committees. She also cited her experience as an insurance company owner as one of her qualifications for the assessor’s post.
Attaway, a Democrat, is completing her fourth term as assessor. She said prior to the election that she has been involved in a variety of community service endeavors for 35 years.
“I have very much enjoyed serving the people of Graham County, and I want to thank everyone,” Attaway said.
