Mike and Eilene Bibb of Safford recently constructed and presented to the Safford City Cemetery a large wooden cross. The cross, which Bibb calls “the Cross at Safford,” reflects a Southwestern design and sits atop a 5-foot concrete pedestal adorned with decorative ceramic tile, stuccoed and finished with a bronze dedicatory plaque. The structure is approximately 20 feet high.
The contribution of the cross had to be approved by the Safford City Council. All members voted affirmatively for the donation during an open council meeting in August. It was emphasized, however, that no city assistance, money, labor or equipment could be used in its construction or placement. The cross was built entirely with donated material and labor.
Assisting the Bibbs in the erection of the cross were Joe Rivas, Norm Moffitt and Chad Jones. Jack Gilbert of Tri-County Materials donated the concrete for the pedestal.
The Bibb family has done similar projects in Mexico, including several at Casa de Esperanza, a children’s home north of Puerto Penasco, Mexico.
