Thanks to the joint effort of several entities, children in Safford have more places to play.

Members of the Gila Valley Recreation Foundation and Stand Against Violence Everywhere joined with representatives of the city of Safford and St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church on Nov. 13 to dedicate new play equipment.

The equipment consists of a large wooden structure supporting a canopied platform, slides, swings and a ramp for children. An identical structure was placed at a play area at the intersection of 14th Avenue and El Paso Boulevard, said Mike Thompson, director of the foundation.

No city money was used for the play equipment, Thompson said. Instead, the $15,400 cost per play area was paid by the foundation and SAVE. The money from these organizations was from donations.

SAVE also donated an additional $3,000 for benches that will be installed at the play areas within the next 60 days.

The city of Safford installed curbing at the play areas and will maintain them. The St. Rose of Lima site was obtained through a lease agreement between the city and the church. The site at 14th Avenue and El Paso Boulevard was donated by the city.

“This was a community effort for the kids,” Thompson said.

Safford Vice Mayor Jason Kouts recognized SAVE, the foundation, Thompson and former foundation director J. T. Cotter for their work in making the play areas a reality.

“It’s because of people like you that children will benefit from this,” he said.

Father Ariel Lustan, pastor of St. Rose of Lima, talked about the church’s role in the project.

“The commitment of St. Rose of Lima is not just for the Catholic community, but for the entire community,” he said.

I must say that I don't find it wrong. Face time? Are you sure that is what JT was after? I must say that I don't see it that way. But there are always "experts" out there to give us the benefit of their educated, unbiased take on things. Right? Thanks for the education. Not! "

Would you mind telling us who "WE" are that you referenced in your comment of November 21st?
You said, " And the current Mayor is in his last term; we promise you."
So, who is "WE", the Mafia?
Also, I will repeat that JT deserves our respect and gratitude and not your insults. He will probably continue his good works no matter what you have to say. "

Do you object to charities? Do you object to Safford having Parks? Or do you protest to much because JT was the Chairman of SAVE & he was personally involved in having something positive & productive accomplished in Safford?

What are you personally doing to better Safford? What has Green personally done himself to make Safford a better place?

Doesn't everyone get tired of these spats.

If one could only imagine what could be accomplished if everyone actually worked together.

    What a concept! "

This time of year, people with capital gains from things like real estate flipping often donate to *foundations* to off-set their income taxes. Some folks set up foundations to handle donations to the community as off-sets to their taxes.

JT's just getting some face time too (in addition to his donation tax off-sets) "

It still does puzzle me that the city was only paying less than $5oo in rent for over a 10 year period. I beileve i am correct on this time frame. And then it is at close to $10,000. That's really the point i was trying to make.
Ii was commenting on someone elses comment that the present council does not want to spend money on (The Kids). "

" Heavy deserves to be given kudos for helping out the Boys and Girls Club, but his donation guestimation is way off. Yes he was renting the building at half-price, and that's where the $30,000 comes from. Well on the other foot, you have a guranteed renter for the entire time, and you can't count money you may or may not have received in rent on the building, especially since the city owns the parking lot and playground. Try renting a building out to someone who cannont access it without trespassing. Good try, but not entirely correct. "

" PimaTwo, you did not ask a simple question. You made an incorrect statement and asked why it was true.
The same would be for me to say that PimaTwo has never paid any of his/her bills. Why?
Do you understand the difference? Why not?
I answered your comment because I don't like to see untruths live and breathe on the internet which then causes normally rational people to swear by its authenticity because they read it online. There is enough deception and lies out there already, if there is something I know is incorrect, I don't mind clarifying it. "

" Ok i relooked it up. What Heavy Owens said was that there was never any grant funding for the Boys and Girls club rent so he accpeted 50% of $300 or $150 for the first 5 years then 50% of $500 or $250 for the second 5 years as rent from the city of Safford. Negotiated amongst himself and former mayor Van Talley and councilman at the time J.T. Cotter. He estimated his personal donations at $30,000.
He now recieves $9600 a year starting in the spring of 2008.
There I corrected my bad. "

PimaTwo wrote on Nov 23, 2008 7:56 PM:

" To The Truth: I was there at the council meeting when Heavy Owens stated that he had "never received any funding for rent". That's what i heard. Why would he say that in a council meeting? The rent would have been raised by him the propery owner. He was askig for more in terms of years forward but the council decided to just make it one year and see what happens later on with the club.
Why do I always get attacked when i ask simple questions? Must be a typical Safford thing. "

" As usual the poster "PimaTwo" is spouting off on something he doesn't know about. Why spread lies like the city never paid rent on the Boys and Girls Club before? Of course they paid rent, the rent was recently raised, but they've always paid rent. Don't get me wrong, Heavy has helped the club out through the years and deserves to be recognized for it. Just don't spread lies like they never paid rent! If you don't believe me, ask city officials or Heavy himself. I know the truth! As far as the new parks, the city did not pay. "

The Courier does not show bias here and that is what bothers you. If it were Ron Green standing there with his mouth open you wouldn't have a problem with it. You are showing your bias... JT Cotter has volunteered his time and his leadership to many projects that benefit safford and our youth. Even though he is no longer on city council, he is still civic minded and works for our community. JT deserves respect and gratitude not your insults. "

Mayor Green & his bunch don't believe in spending money on projects like this. This has something to do with JT Cotter & his bunch remember - they're the enemies - we have to keep the lines drawn here.

Also, Safford has a dilapidated Theater to restore - who needs play areas or parks?

It would be nice if Safford would get on the band wagon & do something positive & productive like this for its citizens wouldn't it? "

I know as a tax payer I wouldn't mind the city dishing out money for this kind of cause. I only hope our city officials do decide to get involved in these projects and help make them even better. Maybe run some water lines for water fountains, plant some trees, and add more play areas etc. "
