Hart's buzzer beater sinks Fountain Hills

Matt Hart scored on a layup to start Saturday’s game at Fountain Hills, and the Safford senior didn’t score again until the final seconds ticked off the clock in overtime.
Fortunately for Safford (12-3), his 3-pointer at the buzzer proved to be the winning basket in a 57-56 victory over the Falcons.
The Bulldogs trailed by two with 13 seconds to play in overtime when Safford coach Troy Powell called a timeout to draw up a play.
The play wasn’t designed to get a specific player a shot, but tremendous ball movement led to a wide-open look for Hart.
“My plays are based off reads,” Powell said. “They made the right read and the right play.”
Safford senior guard Kaden Larkey finished with a career-high 32 points and drilled seven 3-pointers.
Fountain Hills senior Kyle Pederson did everything he could to deny the Bulldogs. The 6-6 guard had 33 points and 12 rebounds in defeat.
“He’s a real good player,” Powell said. “He just kept coming at us.”
Dominique Hunt scored 10 points for the Bulldogs, who moved to 2-0 in conference play with the win.
After playing Maricopa on the road last night, Safford returns home Friday to take on Globe (9-2). The Tigers are ranked No. 5 in Class 3A by the Arizona Republic. |
