According to Safford Police Chief John Griffin’s report, a fire call came in at 2:19 p.m., which he responded to with Detective Glenn Orr and Safford Fire Chief Mike Rhodes.
Griffin wrote that he and Rhodes entered the building and discovered a small fire in the store’s employee restroom. Rhodes put the fire out with a fire extinguisher and told Griffin it looked like arson. Rhodes later located a Sierra Mist Free soda can that smelled of gasoline.
An employee of the video store told police Moeller was upset over fines and fees he owed to the store. She said Moeller owed $45 but said she explained that if she removed the late fees, he would still have to pay $30.
The employee said Moeller is an ex-employee of the store and that he showed up between 11 a.m and 12 p.m. and wanted to talk about his problems. Moeller used the bathroom and later said he smelled smoke when the smell was not yet detectable to the employee. After searching throughout the store, the employee said Moeller claimed to smell smoke from the bathroom. The employee opened the bathroom door, saw the fire and called 911.
Moeller allegedly admitted to starting the fires during an interview with Detective Orr. He said he filled the soda can with gasoline and lit two fires in the store. He told Orr he lit the fires because he was mad at the Movie Gallery and its employees for a bill he says was not of his doing. He also said he lit the fires because he wanted to die, according to Orr’s report.
A search of Moeller’s car, a blue Chevy Cavalier, turned up more Sierra Mist Free soda cans and a two-gallon can partially filled with gasoline.
Moeller was booked into jail for two counts of arson of an occupied structure.
