Saturday's fishing derby cancelled

A popular annual Fourth of July event won’t see the light of day this year.

The youth fishing derby, which normally takes place at the Graham County Fairgrounds, has been cancelled due to an abundance of dead fish.

According to Fairgrounds director Casey Faunce, hundreds of dead fish have been removed from the pond in the last couple of weeks.

The American Legion and the Elks Club are sponsoring the event, and David Mullen, manager at the American Legion, said all options were explored.

One of the options was moving the event to Roper Lake, but that wasn’t possible. Officials at Roper Lake told County Manager Terry Cooper they couldn’t handle the event because of an already high volume of people using the lake for the holiday weekend.

No one is sure how the water became so polluted. Water samples were taken by Arizona Game and Fish for testing, but the results won’t be known until next week.

Cooper, Mullen and Faunce expressed regret that the event was cancelled. The fishing derby has been a staple of Fourth of July celebrations in Safford for at least 15 years.

Instead, a party for children will be held at Firth Park on Saturday, starting at 7 a.m. Games and free hot dogs and watermelon are included.

Mullen said the county is attempting to reschedule the fishing derby for Labor Day weekend at the Fairgrounds.

" Did you notice that the Republican party with all their blow and go did not have a float in the parade either. Well for that fact the Democrates did not enter a float. My guess is that the two parties think they have it made and let our young men and women fight this old man Bushes war. Someone said that the 4th of July committee said no politicial floats just patriotism, so shows they are not patriotic just interested in that $60,000+ job.
Kick them all out of office, give someone else a chance. "

Her party campaigned pretty hard for her and we had never seen her in the community before. I guess this means we're still not gonna see her out helping the community. Ms. Johns & Ms. Reynolds don't think they have to be out anymore too. When is the next election? "

These things do get noticed, as some have posted. One can only hope that people remember and notice when election time comes around. Ask yourself what has the BOS and Safford City council done. Then ask how the County Manger has done as far as doing what is right for this county??? Bet you will come up with nothing but cost the residence if Graham County "

Lets forget thes FOOLS and show them that Graham County is better than this pettiness. And once we have done that lets show them ALL the door Lets stand up united at the next election and vote these fools out of office. Quit letting them make Graham County a mockery. "

I saw 3 or 4 cars in the parade honoring our young men serving in the military, hope those families spread the word about our Board of Supervisors, and lack their of patriotic support they gave our military and county. That place is just a place to party that's it!!! here's an idea Graham County should charge 3 bucks a vechile then that should help out on cost of running the place. All the bbq's,birthday parties, and gatherings is what made that place what it is today. Why should the BOS fix what we just tear apart in 2 weeks!! dont make sence people, but then again Safford and people making sence don't go together "

They were not missed but it was obvious they were not in the parade. Isn't that part of their civic duty show up for parades and ribbon cuttings? "

The salty water will surly effect the soil and most trees and grasses won't tolerate it. The soil will have to be removed or treated. Same thing happened to me with my private well and very salty water. It was a mess. Now have city water. Taxpayers will pay for this for a long time to come...guaranteed. "

I did hear the employees told both the BOS and Terry Cooper and they did nothing it was fine as it is. So the blame should lay with these individuals. Safford City employees did not push it for fear of ther jobs. In todays economy can you blame them with all the lay offs. "

Also how about the grass and trees?? will it kill them will they need replacing or new soil brought in so that things will live/grow there??? How about the ducks the kids like to feed will this affect them??? Seems once again our BOS made another BAD choice to "try" saving money and look it may cost them alot more to fix this mess. Time for NEW BOS IMO "

I'll say it again...The Graham County Board of Directors should be ashamed of themselves and their lack of management and caring for the people that pay taxes. They knew the water was bad but used it anyway. Maybe the BOS should be served a healthy 8 glasses of that well water every day...then bathe and water their personal lawns with it as well. "

The BOS & Sfd C.C could be (I allege), in private, negotiating comingling of funds of City Rec & P&R OR completely turning over the park to the City. If this happens then it excludes Thatcher from services at P&R because it would no longer be County funded. As well, the non-resident fees can be applied and/or fees in general. This would explain the changes & need for funds. I have hinted of this conclusion for months via these blogs. "
