Smoke south of Safford is prescribed fire

Published on Monday, June 22, 2009 4:38 PM MST

All that smoke showing south of Safford is the result of the Greasewood Prescribed Fire, which was started Saturday and expected to be completed Wednesday.

The Coronado National Forest, Safford Ranger District, announced the approximately 32,000-acre fire would take place the week of June 22. The announcement also stated the prescribed fire could begin as early as June 16.

The purpose of the fire is to reduce brush and open the area to improve wildlife habitat and range conditions.

U.S. Forest Service officials believe that drifting smoke will not affect nearby communities.

Visibility may be restricted temporarily due to smoke along portions of highways 191 and 266.

"Visitors are encouraged to use caution while in the area," the announcement states.

There are tons of critics posting here that will never be happy or will always be better than everyone else- I'm just happy to see our USFS finally using prescribed burns to manage the lands again! Thanks guys & gals.......I know it's hard, thankless work you do. Thank you! "

" The Courier printed the announcement that there would be a prescribed burn before it started. That's why I wasn't alarmed when I saw the smoke. "

" I was out of town. Then had everyone calling me on the phone saying my house was up in flames. Then my wife was all upset making me bring her back home to check on our property. I know the prescribed burn had to receive some kind of permits. Why couldn't they just give us notice via radio or here. Idiots! "

" maybe they should give notice BEFORE the so called "prescribed burn"...not after the fact or when people are calling 911!! and then when it gets out of hand then they can blame it on somebody else! IDIOTS "
