Edward Hale Stephens

Funeral services for Edward Hale Stephens, 76, of Roswell, N.M., will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, June 26, 2009, at the Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home Chapel, with Elder Bob Cates officiating. Edward passed away Monday, June 22. Military honors will be presented by the Roswell Veterans Honor Guard. Visita-tion will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 25, at the funeral home.

Edward was born Oct. 17, 1932, to Frederick Hill and Maurine Beard in Knox County, Texas. He graduated from Benjamin High School and following graduation moved to Fort Worth, Texas, and worked for Convair. Edward then served in the United States Army from 1953-1955.

After the service, he moved to Arizona and drove a truck. He later moved to Douglas, Wyo., bought his own truck and went to work for Jim’s Water Service for 11 years. He moved to Roswell in 1982, where he worked for Armstrong Construction and Wylie Construction, retiring in 1990.

After retiring, Ed enjoyed gardening, planting trees, being in the outdoors and spending time with his brother, Lynn. After experiencing life, during and after the service, Edward married his high school sweetheart, Bertha Pearl, in 1981. He was a member of Country Club Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha Pearl of the family home; two brothers, H.A. Stephens (Adel) of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Ira Lynn (Pat) of Roswell; two sisters, Gloria Ann Price of Leander, Texas, and Wanda June Melton (Pete) of Chandler; three stepsons, Jay Eaton of Abilene, Texas, Jerry Carl Eaton (Jan) of Fort Worth and John Eaton (Shannon) of Oahu, Hawaii; three stepdaughters, Jeraine Jacque (Roy) of Artesia, Kathy Hinton and Linda; 10 step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-great-grandchildren; his former wife, Helen Hardwick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Edward is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert Charles and Royce Fred Stephens.
