Vandals who have damaged newspaper racks on two separate occasions are risking a lot for very little reward, according to Safford Police Chief John Griffin.

After striking newspaper racks at the Safford Post Office sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning, vandals returned to hit up the same racks between Friday night and Saturday morning as well as several others located outside various Gila Valley businesses.

According to various Safford Police reports, the Arizona Daily Star and the Eastern Arizona Courier's racks outside the Post Office had their padlocks cut off and coin boxes removed. The Courier also had locks cut off and coin boxes removed from its racks located outside of Arby's and Toni's Kitchen.

According to a Courier representative, approximately $50 in coins was stolen.

Chief Griffin told the Courier in addition to charges of criminal damage and theft under $250, both misdemeanors, the vandals could ultimately be charged with fraudulent schemes and artifices if the County Attorney found reason to believe one person or group of people committed the vandalism. In that case, the vandals could face prison time and fines for a profit of less than what a minimum-wage job pays for one day's work.

If anyone sees anybody tampering with newspaper racks or has evidence in the case, call the Safford Police Department at 348-3190.
