It's been barely more than five months since the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' groundbreaking of The Gila Valley Arizona Temple, but the buildings and surrounding facility are beginning to take shape.

Construction of the temple is ahead of schedule, according to Mark Bryce, Pima stake president and designated church spokesperson for the temple, and workers have recently begun to install 30,000-pound precast stone walls.

"Things have been going very well," Bryce said. "Even the weather has been cooperative."

Framing and construction of the exterior walls and roof of an adjacent meetinghouse (chapel) at the site has been finished. The temple and meetinghouse are located on 17 acres of the LDS Church's former athletic center that used to contain four baseball fields at 5291 W. Highway 70 in Central. The two southern fields will remain in use, and the temple, meetinghouse and parking lot will encompass the space formerly held by the two northern fields.

Construction of the temple is by Jacobsen Construction Company Inc., which is based in Salt Lake City. The company specializes in various building aspects, including mountain resorts, residential, commercial, industrial, light commercial and institutional. Jon Wight, Jacobsen Construction's project manager for the job, told the Courier the company was excited to be building in the Gila Valley, and its workers were performing above expectations.

"We're pushing hard," he said. "We're excited to be a part of the project and be a part of the construction going on down in the Gila Valley."

Wight said he could not give an expected completion date because the LDS Church will perform furnishing and additional construction to the temple after Jacobsen is finished. Previous estimates from the LDS Church have listed the temple to be completed in 2010.

The temple will be the LDS Church's third temple in Arizona. It currently operates the Mesa Arizona Temple and the Snowflake Arizona Temple.

According to a news release from the LDS Church, The Gila Valley Arizona Temple will be 18,561 square feet and will feature steel and concrete, architectural precast stone and cherry and natural maple woods. It will be approximately the same size as the Snowflake Arizona Temple and contain two ordinance rooms and two sealing rooms. The temple will serve about 32,000 members from church stakes in Pima, Thatcher, Safford, St. David, Sierra Vista, Duncan and Silver City, N.M.

After construction of the temple is finished, there will be an open house to allow the public to view it before it is formally dedicated. The LDS Church has yet to determine the duration of the open house.

    To everybody else-

In all reality, is it really going to ruin anyone's day if the LDS church builds another temple? Quite the contrary. History shows that areas with a temple tend to prosper, AND NOT JUST FOR MORMONS. Mormons aren't Islamic jihadists, trying to force their religion on everyone. So...chill out. You do your thing, we'll do ours. "

What in a town without a soul.
Look at the unemployment rate. People leaving the town for greater opportunities and we see what's left. A bunch of rich, well to do's that controlled the town in the first place.
Put that same money spent building that thing and see oh yeah..a community spirit.
