Residents in the center of Safford were awakened by gunshots and screams of pain at about 12:30 a.m. on Saturday when a man became a victim of a drive-by shooting.

A neighbor told the Courier he heard four shots from a shotgun followed by screaming from a man at 318 13th Street. The home is on the north side of 13th Street between Central Avenue and Third Avenue.

The victim, Derek Yentsch, 25, of Safford was on the front porch of the residence when shots were fired at him from a moving sport utility vehicle, according to Safford Police Chief John Griffin. There is no description of the SUV as of Saturday morning.

This house at 318 13th Street in Safford was the scene of a drive-by shooting after midnight on Friday. Derek Yentsch, 25, of Safford was hit in the leg and transported by Southwest Ambulance to the Mount Graham Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to the University Medical Center in Tucson.

Yentsch was hit in his leg with at least one of the shots and was transported by Southwest Ambulance to the Mount Graham Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to the University Medical Center in Tucson.

A local physician assistant, Ray Tuttle, was one of the neighbors who responded to the scene and cared for the injured man until paramedics arrived.

Griffin said the shots appear to be from a 12-gauge shotgun but investigators were still determining the make of the weapon.

Despite having several leads in the case, police do not have a firm suspect yet. Anyone with information is asked to call the Safford Police Depart-ment at 348-3190.

There is a tremendous amount of drug activity in this community & resources are limited to deal with it. Who's front porch will be hit next? Neighbors need to watch out for each other. We all know which neighbors have drug activity and yet we continue, as their neighbors, just to let it go on because we don't want to be tattle tells.
