The Fort Thomas players gave head coach Wil Hinton a Gatorade bath at midfield, and fans rushed from the stands onto the field to congratulate the Apaches.
Cameras flashed, smiles spread across faces, and many hugs were shared after Fort Thomas upended Mayer 22-18 in Fort Thomas.
Neither team moved the ball offensively in the first half, but the second half delivered plenty of drama.
Mayer (5-4) took a 12-6 lead at the end of the third quarter on a 75-yard reverse by halfback Blake Ambrose.
The Apaches (7-2) went up 14-12 after senior quarterback Randall Talgo plunged in from 2 yards and senior fullback Daniel Boni followed with a conversion run.
The key play of the game, however, came on defense. Apaches senior defensive back Jace Wilson intercepted a pass and ran it in 47 yards for a touchdown with 6:59 left in the fourth.
“That was the one big play we’ve been looking for for a couple weeks and we haven’t got,” a wired and drenched Hinton said after the game.
“It’s great to keep your season alive for another week, but I’m more happy for the kids. This has been a special group of kids. Hopefully, we’re ready to go next week and get another one.”
