Now the Apaches (7-2) will regroup and refocus their sights on the Bagdad Sultans in a state quarterfinal game at Bagdad on Friday at 7 p.m.
Bagdad (6-2), which won the 1A West region, had a first-round bye in the playoffs. Its last game was a 28-22 win over Valley Lutheran (4-4) on Oct. 16.
The Apaches didn’t do much on offense in their first-round win over Mayer, but they made plays when they had to and played very well on defense.
Bagdad usually has a good offense, and it scored 45.8 points per game this year. The Sultans prefer to spread the field and throw the ball. They have 163 pass attempts and 128 rushing attempts in eight games.
Zachary Loveall, a 5-10 junior, has had a remarkable season at quarterback for the Sultans. He has thrown for 1,445 yards with 24 touchdowns and just one interception. Loveall has also rushed for 517 yards and eight scores.
The Fort Thomas offensive line will have a big impact on the game. If senior defensive end Jowen Moses and the Apaches defense can pressure Loveall into mistakes, a victory could be in the cards for Fort Thomas.
