There is friendly rivalry not only between Thatcher and Safford at high school events, but middle school as well. This year is no exception. The two eighth grade volleyball programs have met each other a few times during the season. Each meeting has been filled with excitement and great volleyball for middle school.

Safford walked away with the first victory during the Thatcher tournament. The second meeting of the Eagles and Bulldogs on Eagle territory ended with a victory for the Bulldogs in a close match. The third meeting of the two teams ended with different results. Another close match, going three games, ended with the Eagles on top in the only conference match of all the meetings. They met each other again in the Morenci tournament, ending in a tie. Both teams won one game each. Finally, the EAJHA conference tournament in Solomon on Oct. 17 settled the season long debate over whose team would dominate to clinch the title. The Bulldogs settled that debate with a three-game victory over the Eagles. The Bulldogs will continue their season in the Arizona State Junior High Association Volleyball Tournament on Nov. 11-14.

The EAJHA conference tournament was won by Safford’s eighth grade volleyball team. The team includes, front from left, Johnna Johnson, Analyse Angle, Megan Bingham, Stevie Southwell, Dominique Burgman and Cierra Romero; back, coach Rhonda Sears, Jordan Abalos, Miranda Bingham, Sage Ward, Ashtynn Taylor, Sydnee Owens, Tessa Brock, Jordyn Carrasco, coach Lori Walden and coach Karen Cornelius.
