Free John Michael Talbot concert is Nov. 4 at Center for the Arts

John Michael Talbot, known as a "troubador for the Lord," is performing at the Safford Center for the Arts on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 7 p.m. This free concert is sponsored by St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Talbot was the first Catholic to gain acceptance by listeners of other faiths. Prior to writing and performing Christian music, he was a rock musician with the band Mason Profitt, one of the forerunners of country rock, sharing the stage with groups such as The Byrds, The Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd and Poco.

Responding to a call from the Lord, Talbot went from rock to Christian music. Formerly recording with Warner Bros. and Sparrow Records, he now records under his own label and is a prominent Christian artist. Some of his best-known songs are: "Table of Plenty," "Be Not Afraid," "Here I Am, Lord," "Earthen Vessels" and "For You Are My God."

Talbot is a 1982 Dove Award winner and a recipient of the president's Merit Award for the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. He was named No. 1 Christian Artist in 1988 by Billboard Magazine and has had audiences with Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa.

Seating is limited for the concert; tickets are available through Tom Hamm at 651-3141, Veta Estrada at 965-7411, or St. Rose of Lima Church at 428-4920 or 428-4922. Due to the spiritual nature of this event, it is requested that no infants, small children, cell phones or flash photography be in the auditorium.
