The event, organized by the Safford Lions and Rotary clubs, drew 2,000 people Sept. 25 and 4,000 on Sept. 26. The clubs will donate all proceeds to charity, according to an announcement from the chamber.
A total of $5,100 was raised from Salsa tent entries and sales — an increase of 65 percent over last year.
• Judge's choice — Barbara Haralson, Moses Ochoa, Patricia Baca and Laura Slattary.
• People's choice — Ruth Gowin, Amelia Sainz and Vonda Evans.
• Professional: Mary Lou Kreig of the Manor House restaurant.
Salsa-eating contest winners were: Vicky Martinez, Shawn Turley, Peter Judge and Ken Gowin, and jalapeño-eating winners were Roman Loya, Shawn Turley and Victor Pacheco.
Mexico resort winners were Diane Deiter, raffle, and Ruth Gowin, salsa-making challenge. Sponsors of this contest were Westin Resort & Spa in Puerto Vallarta and Royal Villas Resort in Mazatlan.
The announcement also stated that the Salsa Walk drew 60 participants who walked 3.25 miles each to raise $2,000 for the Boys and Girls Club.
