Customer tired of cranky Wal-Mart employees

Editor:

I need to start this with a story. Years ago, when the first Wal-Mart came to town, my youngest daughter and I went with excitement to shop. I wanted some fabric, and while we were waiting for it to be cut, the saleslady was really cranky.

Usually, things like that don't bother me, but on the way out to the car, I commented to my daughter that "the lady in fabrics sure needed to treat the customers better." Little did I know that a manager overheard my comment and followed us out the door and asked me what happened. I told her but said I didn't want to get anyone in trouble. She thanked me for my input.

Now for the rest of the story. Boy, have times changed. On Tuesday, Oct. 27, my husband and I went to Wal-Mart to see a "flash-mob," which a whole bunch of EAC students were doing. It's just a crazy dance and was done in fun to bring joy to people's lives.

The "head" of the whole thing had gotten permission from Wal-Mart executives to do it, and, supposedly, everyone working there knew what was going on. My husband had a video camera and I had a little camera, which we used to take pictures of the joyous event. We both (as well as many other people) got yelled at by Wal-Mart employees, telling us that picture-taking was against policy in Wal-Mart.

Maybe there is a policy; maybe not. Either way, what harm could people taking pictures of young adults doing good things for the enjoyment of other people have done? If their (the Wal-Mart employees') children or grandchildren were dancing, they would have wanted to take pictures, too.

Wal-Mart has enough problems with keeping customers happy because of the long lines we always stand in. Why make it worse by being cranky when something positive is going on? I wish we had somewhere else to shop — I certainly would!

What a difference!! Every checkout counter was open! The clerks were friendly and talkative! There was help everywhere in the store if you need something! Even the customers had smiles on their faces, and why not, the atmosphere in the store was conducive to it. Our local WalMart manager should take an observation field trip to Benson and see what a differnce attitudes make.
I am not putting down those workers in our own local WalMart who do take good care of us. To those a big THANK-YOU. "

In exchange for WalMart's low prices you are sacrificing customer service. Different stores focus on different things. WalMart keeps its prices low by paying lower wages and staffing fewer employees, resulting in longer lines. If you are unhappy with WalMart's service then choose to shop at a store like Safeway or Ace whose prices might be higher but who provide better service. You can't always have it both ways. "

The pimple faced check out kids grabbed the divider and put it up. So I got it again and placed it down, only for him to grab it and say to me in a rude tone "I know where her stuff ends...I don't need the divider up here to tell me" He was very rude and hateful. "

" You try working at Walmart and see what kind of mood you are in every day!

If you don't like it, then don't shop there. Everyone complains and then keeps coming back and spending money to the tune of $80 million per year. "

" I totally agree with "I agree" comment. I am so disgusted with the thought of even going to Wal Mart. Its one thing being grouchy but another thing flat out rude. If I am behaving that way I would expect the same return but a person can be as sweet as can be and leave there feeling totally frustrated. I sure hope that someone at the top of the Wal Mart chain will see these posts. I would love to shop locally but refuse to be treated the way my family and friends have by Wal Mart employees. "

If you was a under payed over worked person you all so be cranky also. "

" Well I am so happy to now live back in the city up here in Glendale where I have a nice new SuperCenter Walmart with very kind employees and great customer service...That Walmart in Safford is a joke....They sure also love catering to the nearby reservation also...Every time my wife and I shopped there employees had attitudes and only 3-4 checkout lanes would be open so why have over 20 of them? Good luck Safford and Thatcher residents with that store... "

" I agree with you too, although my experiences have been different from yours. I would love to have other affordable shopping alternatives, but often it's the employees that are the problem, not the company itself. A grouch is a grouch is a grouch, no matter where they work. And the good ones? It's just a shame their attitudes aren't contagious. "

" I agree with you Diana- I am so tired of Wal-Mart that my family now shops in Tucson at Costco and Target. Wally doesn't get much of our business anymore. "
