The parish hall at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church was transformed into a food warehouse Dec. 21 when volunteers from Southeast Arizona Community Action Program prepared Christmas baskets for low-income families.

"This year we're providing 340 baskets," said Maria Velasquez, program coordinator for Graham and Greenlee counties.

Inside the parish hall, volunteers loaded boxes with nonperishable food items, including canned fruits and vegetables. Each Christmas basket included a turkey for a holiday feast.

Money for the annual project comes from a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The local food bank provided some of the food items.

In another holiday effort, members of the Clubhouse and the Safford Legion Riders donated more than $2,000 to the Odd Fellows for its annual Christmas event.

More than 35 bike riders attended the annual toy run held by the Clubhouse and the Safford Legion Riders on Dec. 5. Entry was $15 per bike plus a new, unwrapped toy.

The organizations were able to raise the money with the help of local riders and local businesses.

"The Clubhouse and Safford Legion Riders would like to thank all of the riders who participated and all of the businesses that helped our very worthy cause," the organizations said in a news release.
