The top 24 teams in the AIA’s power rankings qualify for the tournament, and the top eight teams receive a first-round bye.
Under this system, two Gila Valley teams are all but guaranteed a first-round bye.
Heading into last night’s games, the Pima girls (13-2 in power-point games) were No. 3 in the power rankings, and the Thatcher boys (11-3) were No. 6.
Pima and Thatcher each have three regular season games left before the playoffs begin.
The Thatcher girls could also qualify for a first-round bye. The Eagles (10-4) were No. 9 as of yesterday.
Judging by the Lady Eagles’ remaining schedule and their number of opponents’ wins, they should finish in the top eight and receive the bye.
After a rough stretch, the Pima boys have won four games in a row and sit at No. 16 in the power rankings.
Improving their power ranking would benefit the ‘Riders in two ways — they would have a lesser first-round opponent and also avoid playing the No. 1 team in the second round.
