The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin construction on a Safford sidewalks project this week. This $290,000 city of Safford enhancement project is funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act dollars and spans the west side of U.S. 191 from Discovery Park Boulevard to Relation Street.

Included among the scheduled enhancements are 1.5 miles of concrete sidewalks and driveways, handicap-accessible ramps and curbing, and a metal handrail at the Highline Canal crossing.

Work begins at Relation Street and extend to 16th Street and then progress south in the weeks ahead. The project is expected to be completed by July. Mail services, school bus and trash-collection services for residences on the west side of U.S. 191 will be maintained throughout the five-month project.

Questions regarding the project can be submitted to D & O Contractors at 623-463-0555 or to the ADOT Safford Construction Office at 928-432-4930.
