As if denying necessary medical care wasn't enough, a Safford man added insult to injury Saturday when he allegedly beat his girlfriend and held her against her will.

Robert B. Luna, 47, was arrested for aggravated assault/domestic violence, kidnapping and endangerment after terrorizing a woman who was recently released from the intensive care unit at the Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center.

Safford officers were dispatched to an apartment at 1216 S. Eighth Ave. at about 9 p.m. after the victim's sister notified the police of the situation.

The victim's sister went to the apartment after her daughter told her she saw the victim at the Sonic Drive-in restaurant at 2241 W. Highway 70 in Thatcher. The daughter reported the victim had a black eye and appeared to have been assaulted.

After nobody answered the door, the sister yelled she was going to call 911, and the victim opened the door a short while later.

When officers arrived, the three subjects were inside the apartment, and Luna was on his cell phone saying, "I'm going to jail" over and over.

After officers were advised of the situation by the victim and sister, Luna was taken into custody. He allegedly told officers that he has a temper and had "whopped" his girlfriend. He also advised he had taken two Soma pills to calm down. Soma is a prescription muscle relaxer that works by blocking pain sensations between the nerves and the brain.

The victim told the police she had just been released from the hospital, and her potassium levels were very low. She notified her doctor of the levels at about 11 a.m., and he told her she needed to return to the hospital to be transferred to Tucson for treatment.

She said when she relayed the information to Luna, he became very upset and punched her in the face. He then allegedly held her down on their bed and would not let her up. The victim said Luna then told her he would kill her daughter if she told anyone about the assault. She said the two later went to Sonic to get something to drink, and her niece saw her black eye.

Luna was then transported and booked into the Graham County Jail.
