Graham County residents are advised to dispose of any Sunland peanut butter products which were obtained at local food banks Our Neighbor's Pantry in Safford, Friend to Friend in Thatcher or the Pima Food Distribution Center in Pima. Sunland, Inc., of Portales, NM, issued a nationwide recall of more than 76 peanut, almond, cashew, tahini and blanched peanut products on Sept. 24, after nearly 30 Salmonella infections across 18 states were reported.
Anyone in possession of one the recalled products is asked to return it to the place from which it was obtained immediately. Distribution centers will not be able to exchange for another product at this time, because they have not been provided with alternate products.
Ingestion of Salmonella Bredeney PFGE organism by a healthy person often causes fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Infections are generally more severe and sometimes fatal in frail or elderly people, young children and persons with weakened immune systems.
