Safford Lions visited Ruth Powell School on Feb. 7 to present flags to first-graders and teach them about the American flag. They distributed small flags and leaflets about the flag to 88 students. Lion Janice Rackauskas held up an Arizona flag so the kids could note some similarities in the 13 stripes and the colors. Another Lion, Al Cochran, a retired engineer, spoke about his part in working on the spacecraft that took the American flag to the moon, where the astronauts set it up. He also displayed a replica of the nation's first flag.

Jon Stewart, president of the Safford Lions Club, commented, "This is one of the most enjoyable projects we're involved in."

Club members are visiting all of the county's first-grade classes during February. Wendy John, Safford Lions secretary, chairs the project and schedules the visits.
