SAFFORD — A man who claimed to be a "gangster" made a stink at a convenience store March 16 when he harassed customers and a clerk after he defecated on himself.
Anthony Ray Thomas, 20, was arrested and booked into the Graham County Jail on charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and underage alcohol in body.
Safford officers were dispatched to the Minit Market at 105 E. U.S. Highway 70 at about 1:30 a.m. regarding a disorderly customer who was threatening customers and the clerk.
Multiple witnesses at the store said Thomas was trying to act like a gangster and asked them who they "banged with." In this context, the term means to conduct criminal conduct with a gang. The witnesses also said it was obvious that Thomas had defecated in his pants.
The clerk reported Thomas became upset when the store phone she let him use wouldn't work. She refused to let Thomas use her cell phone, and he began cursing at her and calling her profane names in Spanish.
Thomas continued to harass other customers and threatened to shoot and kill one of the witnesses, according to a police report. He then left the area in a silver Nissan vehicle.
Another Safford officer caught up to Thomas and pulled the vehicle over in the 1900 block of 1st Avenue. A female, later identified as Thomas' mother, was driving and Thomas was in the front passenger seat.
The officer noted a pungent odor of human feces mixed with an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle. He also observed Thomas' eyes to be bloodshot and watery.
The officer then confirmed Thomas was under the legal age to consume alcohol and attempted to place him under arrest. Thomas would not comply, however, and pulled away from the officer. After Thomas' continued refusal to comply, the officer fired his TASER at him.
Both probes struck Thomas in the chest, and he received a jolt that sent him to the ground. A second, five-second burst of the TASER eventually compelled Thomas to comply with the officer's orders, according to a police report.
After being placed in handcuffs, Thomas began yelling and cursing at the officer. He was then transported to the jail.
