Anthony Mojarro Bonilla, or “Tony” as he was known by all, a longtime resident of Safford, passed away Thursday evening, Oct. 26, 2017, at his residence, with his loving family at his side. Tony was 63.
Tony was born Feb. 16, 1954, in Morenci to Beatrice and Jose Bonilla. He served in the United States Army as a tanker in the 2nd Armored Division from 1972 until 1975.
After he was honorably discharged, Tony began working for Phelps Dodge Mining Corporation in Morenci at the smelter in 1976, and retired in 2008 after 32 years. He then obtained work at Haven Health of Safford, later retiring in 2015.
Tony was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed cheering for his beloved Redskins and Celtics. Tony enjoyed reading and liked to go shooting. He was an active member of his church, but most important to him was spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Tony is survived by: his wife of 40 years, Sally Bonilla; two sons, Anthony Bonilla and Thomas Bonilla (Billie Sue); three granddaughters, Angelina, Aubriana and Aurora; his sister, Esther Calonge; and two brothers, Joe Bonilla Jr. and Johnny Bonilla (Elizabeth).
Funeral services for Tony were conducted Thursday morning, Nov. 2, 2017, at The Potter’s House Christian Church in Safford by Pastor Richard Kidd. Military honors were conferred by the Gila Valley Veteran Honor Guard.
The family of Tony Bonilla would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Mount Graham Hospice (Gary and Mary), The Potter’s House Christian Fellowship (Pastor Richard and Julie Kidd), our family, and all of our church family and friends for the phone calls, texts, visits, food and outpouring of love and support through this difficult time — Sally, Anthony and Thomas Bonilla
