Gathering for a dinner July 9 at Eastern Arizona College, members of the Safford Lions Club celebrated an evening of memories, awards and a changing of the guard.

Lion Susie Thompson led a touching tribute to the lives of members who died in the past year: Guy Scott, J.R. Ramirez, Ann Borland, Bea Hernandez and Bill Lewis.

Past District Governor Johnny LaDue inducted two new members: Cheryl Cline and Billie Sue Bonilla. Then District Governor Richard Hopkins, of the Buckeye Lions Club, installed the Safford Lions board for 2021-22: President Dennis Sawyer, First Vice President David Holmes, Second Vice President Tabetha Aranda, Secretary Keith Alexander, Treasurer David Morse, Tail Twister Mike Garcia, Program Director Ed Lopez, Lion Tamer Jim Warren, LCIF Chair Marion Hastings, Membership Chair Chris Gibbs, Service Chair Cynthia Holmes, Directors Lou Amerson and Charlene Schreur.

Outgoing President Marion Hastings recognized Charlene Schreur, Joe Arp, and Chris Gibbs for 15 years of service, and Lion Carolyn Vessels for 25 years. Gibbs, the past district governor was also honored with a Melvin Jones Fellowship; and Keith Alexander, ending his year as district governor and beginning another year as secretary of the club, received a plaque naming him Lion of the Year.

Other members were commended for outstanding service in what Hastings described as a difficult year due to the pandemic.
