GREENLEE COUNTY — The Clifton and Duncan libraries will be hosting a new coding club thanks to a new grant from the Arizona State Library.
The Greenlee County Library System announced it has received a grant for $33,400 from the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records. The grant funding will be used to “provide coding literacy and basic robotic skills through the establishment of a weekly Coding Club and provide STEAM family programming once a month at the Duncan and Clifton public libraries,” a release stated.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our rural libraries to provide and reinforce science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) opportunities for local families.” Greenlee County Librarian Karen Soohy said. “Setting up a weekly Coding Club has been a goal for us, and these grants will allow the libraries to purchase the tablets and equipment needed. Our goal is to do coding and robotics three times a month and have a family-oriented STEAM program the fourth week. We also plan to download a number of STEM- related apps to the tablets for use in the libraries. While the tablets will not be available for checkout, we plan to purchase a lot of STEAM-related kits for families to experiment with at home.”
The grant is being used to purchase iPads and apps to be used with the STEM/STEAM materials in library programs. Another $3,000 mini-grant has been awarded that will purchase other STEM materials that library patrons will be able to check out.
Current library programming includes equipment available for checkout at the library that lets visitors participate in geocaching, stargazing, rockhounding and bird watching. Programming has expanded to include a number of children's programs, including LEGO clubs, cooking classes and now a coding club.
“These subgrants allow libraries to go above and beyond in their communities,” Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs said. “These projects will increase access to information and education for Arizonans. They support institutional improvements and help form inclusive communities.”
The Coding Club and STEAM programming is set to begin the first week of September and will run through the summer of 2020. For more information about these programs call 928-865-2461 for Clifton and 928-359-2094 for Duncan.
