Deer fire

Lines of containment around the Deer fire were established by Black Mesa Hotshots and Fort Apache fire crews.

ALPINE — The Deer fire near Campbell Blue has grown to 335 acres.

The U.S Forest Service reported the fire remains at 0-percent containment while it is allowed to burn off unburned fuels. The strategy to monitor is also prompted due to safety concerns from the overabundance of snags from the 2011 Wallow fire, as well as steep slopes.

While fire crews monitored the blaze, they also focused on protection of Luce Ranch, power lines and monitored perimeter growth. Construction of containment lines from Luce Ranch, west to Forest Road 8882 and from the fire’s southern edge, south to Forest Road 58H started Wednesday, June 5, and will continue until in place.

Thirty-nine personnel are assigned to the fire, including the Black Mesa Hotshots and Fort Apache fire crews.

Smoke from the fire may be visible from U.S Highway 191 and in the vicinity of Campbell Blue and the Blue community.
