The Mine Safety and Health Administration is investigating the death of a contractor Wednesday at Freeport-McMoRan’s Morenci mine.
Details of what led to the contractor’s death have not yet been released.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that there was a fatality of a contractor at Morenci on September 15,” Jim Telle, manager for Freeport’s external communications, said in an email.
Additional details may be released Monday, Telle said.
According to records obtained under the Freedom of Information Act and the Mine Safety and Health Administration website, up until Wednesday the Safford and Morenci mines had recorded only one fatal accident each from 2008-2020 and none had taken place within the last three years.
