WILLCOX — Willcox hosted the 2019 Sandy Cook Invitational on Friday, and Morenci came home with a third-place finish.

Willcox won its own tournament by 18 strokes.

Madison Delgado

Morenci’s Madison Delgado chips her way out of the sand trap and onto the green.

Morenci head coach David Gonzales said, “We’re still progressing in a positive way. I was pretty satisfied with how they did today. I’d like to see a few more scores under 100, but we had some decent rounds. Our low player today was Michael Wirkus with an 89. It was nice. It earned him fourth for the tournament, and we got a couple personal bests on the full 18.”

Team results:

1. Willcox 64-over

2. Bisbee 82-over

3. Morenci 87-over

4. Safford 141-over

5. Benson 162-over

6. Pima 163-over

Willcox head coach Calvin King said, “I’m a new coach. I do things different. The previous guy did other things that were successful. He went to state a couple of years. The kids are starting to adjust and see that the work we put in during the week is what makes them successful on Friday or Saturday, and we’re seeing it. Everybody’s improving a little bit. We still have a long ways to go, but we have the kids that’ll get there because they’re willing to work and get there. That makes me proud. Winning the tournament is fantastic, but knowing the kids are starting to buy in to what I’m trying to do, and willing to give it a try, that means a lot to me. That’s a lot of respect right there. We’ll keep working and, hopefully, keep getting better and better.”

Richard Valenzuela

Morenci’s Richard Valenzuela clears his ball out of a dusty patch of fairway.

2. RJ Wright III (Bisbee) 7-over

3. CJ Sherman (Bisbee) 12-over

4. Micheal Wirkus (Morenci) 17-over

5. Coby Hall (Willcox) 19-over

6. Tyler Smith (Benson) 21-over

7. Lynden Smyer (Willcox) 22-over
