Evaluation process being created

During a Safford City Council work session last week, the council approved the creation of a subcommittee to come up with a process to evaluate City Manager John Cassella’s job performance.

The subcommittee consisting of Safford City Council members Brad Hemphill, Gene Seale, Mayor Jason Kouts and Human Resources Director Jenny Taylor is tasked with coming up with the evaluation process.

Taylor said evaluating the job performances of city employees and directors of departments is a normal procedure done in November and December of each year. There had been a previous evaluation process for the city manager, but council members objected to certain hard-to-define questions in the existing process, Taylor said.

The subcommittee will come up with the evaluation process and then it will need to be approved by the city council, Taylor said.

Although there are no hard deadlines, Taylor said they hope to have the evaluation process done before the end of the year and complete the evaluation process in January of 2022 to coincide with Cassella’s 18-month anniversary on the job.
