SAFFORD — Safford City Councilman Chris Taylor announced via e-mail Wednesday his intention to run for U.S. Congress in Arizona’s First District in 2020.
He joins former Flagstaff City Councilwoman Eva Putzova in a challenge for the seat currently held by Tom O’Halleran, D-Ariz.
Taylor’s e-mail did not include his reasoning for his run, nor his campaign platform. It did, however, include links to his campaign fund-raising platform, campaign Facebook page and campaign website.
His website lists nine reasons “why I am running for Congress”:
• Our Constitution is in peril
• Our veterans deserve better
• Out of control spending
• The economy
• Broken immigration system
• Hyper partisanship is destroying this nation
• Opioid epidemic
• National security and foreign policy
Taylor works for Caldwell McDougal Funeral Chapel and is in the final year of a four-year term on the Safford City Council, having been first elected in 2016. He is running as Republican, the first to announce for the 2020 election.
Putzova is running a Democratic primary challenge to incumbent O’Halleran. On her campaign website, she states she was born in Slovakia and became a U.S. citizen in 2007. She was elected to one four-year term on the Flagstaff Council in 2014.
According to her campaign website, Putzova’s issues are:
• Universal health care
• Tuition-free college
• Indigenous rights
• Immigration overhaul
• Meaningful climate action
• No more wars
• Women’s reproductive health
• Workers’ rights
• LGBTQ-plus rights
