Three Safford residents were killed in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 191 near the Cochise/Graham county line Wednesday evening.
According to Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves, a tractor-trailer was traveling southbound on Highway 191, when the semi driver observed a northbound Kia sedan drifting into his lane of travel around 5:15 p.m.. The driver of the semi-truck attempted to avoid the sedan, but was unsuccessful. The sedan collided into the rear portion of the semi-trailer and continued northbound in the southbound lane. A Volkswagen sedan was traveling behind the semi-truck and trailer when the Kia collided with it. The driver of the Volkswagen was flown to a Tucson hospital.
The driver of the Kia, Jennifer Lemons, 50, died along with her passengers, Teresa Hammond, 58, and Tony Plantz, 57, Graves said.
Both lanes of the highway were closed for several hours as DPS investigated.
