SAFFORD — Basketball has a strong presence in the Gila Valley and the most recent camp to take place this summer break was the Eastern Arizona College camp run by men’s basketball coach Maurice Leitzke.
This marks the 10th year in a row EAC has conducted the camp.
Campers of various age groups gain a grasp of the fundamentals and then get to put it all together in a scrimmage on the last day of camp.
“They enjoy that a lot,” Leitzke said. “The last day of camp is fun with the competitions we have. Everybody gets a ball and a T-shirt. It’s the biggest hit. Even more so, two or three weeks after camp, I’ll see them in the grocery or something like that, and they say, ‘Hey, coach!’ and that type of thing.
“We sure appreciate the community for all the support and we love doing it and helping the kids.”
